TOP NEWS OF THE WEEK

SLA authorities executed a successful raid against a gang operating out of S690 known as the Dragon's Claws. The gang was deemed due for kick-back as a result of its activities with the Skin Trade and an escalating conflict with 2 major gangs, namely the Johannas and Krosstown Traffic.
Actual details of the raid are less forthcoming however due to the news black out imposed by Station Analysis. What is known however is that there were no SLA Operative casualties and that a number of key gang members were executed in the ensuing conflict. Eye witness accounts report a shoot out between gang members and an operative in the doorway of the Whiteout Arcade.  How many gang members remain at large is undetermined. -Edwin Clitheroe, SCL 6D, Third Eye News

ARSON STILL OCCURS, DESPITE WARNINGS

Fire Marshals report that over 75 people where caught and summarily shot for arson, during Devil's Night.  This did not stop the almost 45 million credits worth of damage.  Work is already on the way to restore water and electricity to the damaged areas, but no estimate for completion of the project has been given.  Minor riots have already broken out in the black out areas and Shivers are attempting to stop any looting from taking place. -Sara Brynt, SCL 7C, Third Eye News

CARRIEN ATTACK ON FACTORY WORKERS

Three factory workers employed by  the ICC Chemical Factory in S690 were found dead today, the victim of a Carrien attack.  The three workers, whose names are being withheld till family are notified, were found at 10 am this morning.  Shiver units are being placed on patrol in the area and a team of Operatives are currently being assigned to eradicate the nest.   The bodies were found mutilated near a burnt out Warehouse by one of the ICC security staff on a routine patrol. -Gav Clough, SCL 7B, Mort Times

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Neil de Carteret, SCL 9B, Third EyE News reporter
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Each week we look at one of many valuable but oft forgotten employees of SLA  Industries who keep the world running.

This week: The Teacher

NC: Name?
OP: Drill Sergeant Oliver Perrone

NC: Occupation?
OP: Junior Business Skills Instructor at Meny

NC: Does it pay well?
OP: It keeps me in fags and food. In that order.

NC: Exactly what do you teach?
OP: Basic business skills, for people who've never encountered that sort of thing before. How to use a computer for writing letters, setting up a database, finding information, and the elements of micro-economics. My course lasts for four weeks, and by the end of it I hope that all students can get by without accidentally bankrupting themselves.

NC: Does it work?
OP: Mostly it does. Some recruits are just determined that they'll never need these skills, so they spend their time playing "Despot" and bunking off. I think it's their loss. Even if they plan to be in a squad with a Business educated Op, they ought at least to be able to understand what's being done with their wages.

NC: You carry the title "Drill Sergeant". Are you a civilian or an operative?
PC: An operative.  I draw my pay in credits, I can carry guns and I have an SCL.  I went through Meny and Orange Crush in my time, but now I'm assigned to passing on what I learnt to the next generation.  There are civilian
instructors here; in fact I work with a few in my department.  Mostly they are specialists in certain fields who lecture final stage recruits.

NC: Do recruits act like school kids?
PC: Five year olds, the lot of them. When they show up they're all quaky and nervous. After all, for a lot of them it's the first time they've left home, so we try to put them at ease, help them get accustomed to the place. The combat instructors are a darn sight nastier, because they have to establish and maintain utter respect, but in my field I can afford to be more human.  When we've got them settled in we can afford to push a bit more, but by that stage they're starting to realize that they're going to be Ops and they get egos the size of soccer pitches. The worst ones are the Kick Murder and Death Squad trainees who decide to take just my course outside of combat training. They think they're so superior.

NC: Do you have to discipline them?
PC: Official discipline at Meny is fairly black and white. For anything up to and including skipping lessons, we can put their names on the defaulters list, which means they have to attend for certain off hours duties. Frankly, it's hardly a punishment for most of them. For more serious infractions, we have to send them to the commander's office. He has the authority to order anything from twenty-four hour PT to execution by firing squad.

A DAY IN THE LIFE cont.

NC: Firing Squad? Does that ever happen?
PC: I've been teaching at Meny for fifteen years and I've seen it happen once. A recruit Ebon was being bested by a combat instructor on an weekend exercise, and he lost his marbles. He tried to red thermal him. The instructor lived, but with horrible burns, and the Ebon was shot dead the following dawn in front of two thousand other recruits. That sort of lesson really sticks.

NC: Thank you for answering our questions. We're sure you have lots of recruits to educate.
PC: As you were, soldier.

THE SHIVER REPORT

Sectors L-10 through L-14, B-3 through B-7 and Sectors C-17, M-23 and H-9 will be without electricity and water for at least one week while repairs are conducted due to the massive fires on Devil's Night.  Civilians are asked to leave the repair workers alone.

Shivers advise against living in sector G-10 until the Gore Zone is relocated for next seasons games.  Any deaths in this sector are not held accountable to SLA or it's subsidiaries.

OBITUARIES

A memorial service will be held for Chalice, Strike Ebon 10A, of Squad Shield on 26/11//99 at The Divine House of Remembrance at 16.00 hrs.  The SLA authorities wish it to be known that Chalice gave his life for the company but due to the nature of the wounds sustained it is impractical for the body to be viewed.
