DEVIL'S NIGHT SCARE

Downtown is mixed with worries and concerns as fires light the night sky last night.  Four major fires and numerous minor ones, erupted though out downtown as the Fire Department starts it's yearly battles of Devil's
Night.  These initial fires are mostly tests from the arsonist to check the FD abilities to respond to emergencies.  Fire Marshals warn that any perpetrator called will be shot on site. -Robert Smith, SCL 8C, Mort Times

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Neil de Carteret, SCL 9B, Third EyE News reporter +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Each week we look at one of many valuable but oft forgotten employees of SLA  Industries who keep the world running.

This week: The Doctor

N: Name?
C: Celia Grendell

N: Occupation?
C: Surgeon for Downtown 449 GAM

N: Does it pay well?
C: Are you kidding?  No, we work for peanuts.  Maybe 100u a week.  A good week.

N: Doesn't sound much for a specialist occupation like Surgeon.
C: Surgery is dead, my friend.  Especially as most of our patients... excuse me, clients, are on the dole.  A paying customer is a rare sight indeed.

N: So you're paid per operation.
C: Hell, yes.  In some cases, per incision.  Downtowners don't generally have time for serious operations.  Either they bleed to death where they're shot, or knifed, or whatever, or they're not ill enough for me to be needed.  Mostly I work on newborns, household accidents, "Walking Wounded" injuries.  And when they get here they sure want they're money's worth.

N: But paying customers are rare?
C: How can I put this...  Because of the nature of most injuries that I treat, getting payment, or even deposits in advance is difficult to say the least.  Then there's mortality rates, higher than you would think.  Of the pa..  clients that I see, maybe 60 - 70 percent are savable.  There's a
different story in "simple" medicine, hardly anybody dies of common cold.  That's still a good proportion of survivors.  Then there's the victims of violence (that's about half) who don't want to take the mandatory questioning by Shivers concerning how they got their injuries.  Do a bunk before they're finished they're term of recovery.  Security in this place is Monarchs only, i.e.: none.  Bottom line?  I get paid for less than half of the clients I operate on.

N: So how much would, say a gunshot wound to the torso cost?
C: Civilian gunshot wound?  You're looking at operating theater, about 10 pieces of sterile equipment, several pints of blood for transfusion, perhaps 1 hour in surgery, anesthetic, 2 nurses, one surgeon, two nights bed-rest...  maybe 450, 500 unis.  That's a CAF 5mm bullet though, the only kind we're officially allowed to take.  Operative gunshots?  10mm?  Multiple impacts? Serious blood loss?  We're talking thousands.

N: What about Operatives?  More the inflictors rather than the inflicted?
C: You betcha.  Most Ops are too above normal medicine.  They see Karma as they're only means of survival.  Not that I disagree all the time - there's
only so much I can do about a severed head - but they don't realize that broken bones, internal injuries, they're all cheaply and easily solvable right here on their doorstep.  No need for an APC to Uptown to splint a broken finger...

N: And the damage they cause?
C: Ahh...  On reflection, I think "No Comment" is the best answer.

N: Thank you for your time.
C: No problem.  Say, that's a nasty cut you've got there...
